Supporting a Loved One with a Chronic Illness This Holiday Season

8 meaningful ways to show care and compassion this holiday season.

#1 Acknowledge Their Needs

Plans might need to change last minute due to health. Be flexible and let them know it’s okay to prioritize rest.

"We’d love to see you if you’re feeling up to it, but no pressure!

#2 Offer Specific Help

Instead of asking, 'Let me know if you need anything,' offer specific support:

  • Bring a dish

  • Help with errands

  • Provide transportation.

#3 Create a Comfortable Environment

Ask what would make them feel more at ease, like:

  • A quiet space to rest

  • Dietary accommodations

  • Smaller, less overwhelming gatherings

#4 Respect Their Boundaries

Let them decide how much they want to share about their illness. Be a listener, not a prier.

"I'm here to listen if you feel like talking about it."

#5 Small Gestures Go a Long Way

A thoughtful note, checking in, or helping out behind the scenes can show care without being overwhelming.

#6 Be Present

Focus on enjoying the time together. Celebrate their presence without fixating on their illness. Create meaningful, low-pressure moments.

#7 Don’t Take It Personally

If they cancel plans or need space, it’s about their health, not you. Support them with understanding.

#8 Emotional Support Matters

A little kindness can mean the world. Show you care with kind words, small gestures, or just listening.

Holding Hope,

Laura
